From the Horse’s Mouth

Camp Ton-A-Wandah is a traditional residential summer camp for girls located in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Established in 1933 to provide an unspoiled summer retreat for girls ages 5-16, the mission lives on today.

In addition to horseback riding, campers can enjoy fine arts, preforming arts, dance, volleyball, basketball, softball, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, games, archery, riflery, rock climbing, high ropes, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, hiking, backpacking, and more.

The equestrian program is based on the principles of Hunt Seat Equitation with constant emphasis on safety and respect for horses. Campers are instructed in the care and handling of horses, how to mount and hold the reins, and how to achieve a good seat and sure hands. Once the rider has control of herself and her mount, she learns to post a trot and canter on the right lead.

Camp Ton-A-Wandah has been owned and operated by members of the Haynes family for three generations. The camp’s property boasts 365 acres of mountainous terrain including streams, trails, campsites and a cascading waterfall. Campers may also have the chance to explore Western NC for picnics, hiking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing and campouts.
